Classes for Older Adults
Older adults may choose among three different adult classes. In general, all three of these classes use the same curriculum, The Adult International Lesson Series. This quarterly study (thirteen lessons) presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life.
Jessie Boger Class
This class was founded in 1944 through the efforts of Mrs. Boger and Dr. Frank Jordan, who was pastor of Central at that time. Many of the men of Central were away at the Second World War and Mrs. Boger saw a need for a class for young women who were left at home. When the war was over, Mrs. Boger suggested that the class invite their husbands to join them. Since that time the class has been a class of women and men. Mrs. Boger died on May 2, 1999. Her two sons, John and Bill, continue to be active members of the class today. Currently, the class has three excellent teachers: John Boger, Iris Elliott, and Ava Plott. The class reaches out to the world and the community by supporting a young boy in Central America and contributing to the Salvation Army, CVAN and the Community Free Clinic. Max Hutchins serves as the Class President. Jessie Bogers meets in the church parlor on Sunday mornings.
Lester D. Coltrane, Jr. Class
The Lester D. Coltrane, Jr. Class was organized in 1924 as a young men’s class by Rev. Bill Jenkins. At that time, the class was called the Bill Jenkins Bible Class to honor its first teacher. In the 1970s, the class name was changed to the current name. This class has continued the legacy of ministry to the men of this church. Today, men of all ages gather to join in prayer, song, support, humor, and faith building. Many members of this class are second generation members. Currently, LeRoy Deabler and Jeff Gallup lead this class in weekly discussion and reflection. Leon Lackey serves as the Class President which meets upstairs in the Education Building.
Ellen Pemberton Class
The Ellen Pemberton Class promotes Christian fellowship and spiritual growth. Established by Mrs. Ellen Pemberton, the class consists primarily of older ladies (but a warm invitation is extended to all!). The Hildreth Jordan Scholarship is awarded each year to outstanding Central students. The class sponsors this scholarship which is given in honor of their teacher of nearly thirty years, Hildreth Jordan. Ladies in the class enjoy each other’s company and are often seen together in the community having lunch or coffee together. The class uses a variety of curriculum but primarily studies the Adult Bible Studies series. Donna Johnson and Carolyn Miller teach the class on a rotational basis. Jean Johnson serves as the Class President. The class meets upstairs in the Education Building.
